Creating and working abstractly has been a passion of mine after being introduced to abstract expressionism during an art class many years ago. After taking other traditionally formatted painting & drawing classes, experiencing abstract theories & techniques for the first time freed up my whole creative approach, and I saw my artwork become much more expressive, intuitive, & real.
Abstract art can sometimes appear random or unplanned, but in reality, there is always an idea or intention that begins the artistic process and careful organization & structuring that finishes it.
Color is always the catalyst & inspiration for my pieces. Carefully worked out color studies are always done prior to placing paint on the canvas.
As each step influences the next, after the color palette has been determined, deliberate brush stokes drive the next steps and the painting journey begins.
Ideas & direction of the piece emerge during the creative process. Paint & glaze are added then subtracted; surfaces are worked into with brushes or palette knives, then scraped, sanded, & manipulated with the intention of visually balancing the work and coming to a place of completion. Many hours and endless micro-steps have been taken along the way to bring a painting into fruition.
The final canvas surface will reveal transparent washes contrasting with thick impasto, calm vs. kinetic spaces, and visual depth from its many layers.
For viewers and collectors of my work, I strive to create the following parameters for my artwork:
